The story of a family in crisis and
the loyal dog that
holds them together
THE
LABRADOR PACT
Matt
Haig’s cult black comedy
THE LABRADOR PACT: A Novel (Viking:
On-Sale Date: March 3, 2008;
ISBN: 978-0-670-01852-9; $23.95;
352 pages) was a word-of-mouth
hit in Europe and the film rights
have been sold to Brad Pitt’s
Plan B production company. In
this unconventional tale, the
author explores the quirks and
crises of family life from the
perspective of Prince, a black
lab. This canine narrator, who
nobly abides by the “Labrador
Pact” (Duty Above All)
views it as his sacred duty
to watch over his family and
to guard its integrity—no
matter what the cost.

About
the Authors
Professor Horatio Tanglewood is an evil
Englishman who lives in a wooden palace
in the middle of Shadow Forest, which
he rules under the name of the Changemaker.
He wrote a book called The Creatures
of Shadow Forest and keeps the pickled
heads of his enemies in jars. His favourite
music in the world is the sound of a
child screaming. He is currently working
on his autobiography.
The author goes by the rather boring
name of ‘Matt Haig’, although
he was in fact christened Zerebubul
Osrich Winterbottom the Third. He rudely
interrupts the story on two occasions,
just when you’re getting into
it. He once bumped into Professor Horatio
Tanglewood in his local library. The
professor asked to borrow his pen but
never gave it back. Matt lives in the
North of England and is the author of
two books for grownups, The Last Family
in England and The Dead Father’s
Club.

now owe another debt to Shakespeare, and one
to Haig, for re-imagining a tragic masterpiece

captivating and heartbreakingly poignant.
The result is an absolutely irresistible read.”
—Booklist (Starred Review)
“The
plucky hero impressively navigates the gloomy,
pungent waters of retribution, death and guilt,
and Haig gives an enviable job of leavening
a sad premise through the words and actions
of a charming, resilient young man.”
—Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)
“Totally
engrossing.” —Stephen Daldry director
of The Hours and Billy Elliott
